About SMCpg
About SMCpg
Social Media Club is a platform to host conversations that explore key issues facing our society as technologies transform the way we connect, communicate, collaborate and relate to each other.
It brings together people who create and consume media and have an interest in seeing the ‘media industry’ evolve for everyone’s benefit – journalists, publishers, communications professionals, artists, amateur media creators, citizen journalists, teachers, students, etc.
Chris Heuer and Kristie Wells started the organization in March 2006.
The first chapter was launched in the San Francisco Bay Area, CA (USA) on August 16, 2006.
Our Core Values
There are four core areas which are most important to us:
- Media Literacy,
- Sharing Lessons Learned,
- Encourage Adoption of Industry Standards, and
- Promote Ethical Behavior.
More importantly, we want to ensure that the world of Social Media does not become an echo chamber of self-reinforcing thoughts, but is instead fueled by diversity of opinions and perspectives.

The Local Chapter
In Malaysia, Social Media Club Penang (SMCpg) was set up in September 2010, following in the foot-steps of the successful Social Media Club Kuala Lumpur (SMCkl). We organize monthly meet-ups, providing social media enthusiasts an opportunity to share and promote better use of social media for different causes and arenas, including business, education, government and non-profits.
SMCpg also aims to establish a platform where innovators and people from diverse backgrounds and experiences can come together to engage and collaborate with the community on the issues of social media and technology while learning from the different topics which are offered monthly. In an effort to increase information sharing, we periodically invite panelists and speakers from around the country who are actively making a difference through social media.
