SMCpg #5 : Mobile Photography Heritage Walk on 9th July '11 - Register now!

Posted by email
We were so happy with the outcome of SMCpg #4 in Chai Diam Ma. Our next meet up #5 will be another exciting theme. It is going to be about mobile photography of Heritage Walk in Georgetown, Penang.

Most of the time, when we mention about photography, we think about big, heavy, black expensive DSLR to capture moments or places. Sometimes, it might be too bulky and troublesome when it comes to sharing pictures with other and also converting them into your computers. Nowadays, we can just snap it with our mobile phones and then upload to the web almost instantly. This have been the current trend of today's photography.

In this event #5, we will be walking along the streets of Penang, taking pictures as you go with your mobile phones. At the end of the event, we will meet up at our final destination to chill with some food and drinks. We will also have a session of sharing on how social media play a part in this event.

Social Media Club penang would like to invite you (max 20 person) to join the fun on this event. Kindly click here to be part of this event. The details are below:

SMCpg #4 Eat, Drink, Meet & Get Social

Posted by email
This is a different approach on the 4th SMCpg meetup. For the first three session, we invited speakers to share on topics related to social media. This times we change to something very casual, in a very cozy environment with a little fun in it.

It was a Sunday Morning on 22nd May 2011 with some sprinkle of rain to welcome everyone in Queens Street, Penang. We gathered in Chai Diam Ma, around middle of georgetown, Penang.

"Chai Diam Ma" as translated from Hokkien language is as "Grocery Shop". The environment reminded our childhood times and the owner created a cozy place for us to enjoy the drink or have a meal with many artist decoration to fascinate.

We started the event by introducing ourselves and at the meantime we are having our breakfast or brunch. There are quite a variety of food and unique beverage to order and everyone seem to please on the meal.

After the meal, we start a mini game just to have some fun. The game is call Guess Word. The answers designed just for this Social Media event to get everyone familiarized with what social media can bring us in life. Keywords like Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, etc. were among the famous social media tools we can use. The guess game also include Penang's special such as food, places, shopping etc.

Everyone was having fun during the guessing game. It was hilarious when the answers either has been hit or miss. Even the staff in Chai Diam Ma joined the game.

The event was a success and gave SMCpg further understanding on how people would like to get social together on this type of event.

Check it out on one of famous Penang blogger who have join this event as well. We love everyone who took part and can't wait to see everyone on the next meetup.

SMCpg #1: Are you on the map?

Smcpg1
This is the inauguration session of SMCpg, and in the first event we're going to discuss about one of the hottest topic in town: Geolocation social networks.

If you're still wondering what geolocation is, you're probably missing something that is revolutionizing the social media industry. As Foursquare, Gowalla, Brightkite and even Facebook Places is joining the competition to fulfill the desire of users to broadcast geolocation related information, we keep wondering, what can we harvest from this?

Join @lightyoruichi, @hakimism and @daaditsu to discuss about how businesses and individuals can better utilize geolocation social networks, from different angles.

PS: We also aim to achieve the 1st swarmbadge on Foursquare in Penang.

SMCpg #1 will be featuring:

Speakers1

@daaditsu: Thean Soon is a self-taught "new-media" peep with I.T. background that spends way too much time on the Net, due to his work nature, which ended up indulging in almost every major social networking sites. Believed that endless sharing and contributing of constructive ideas among fellow social media peers can make a difference, if not differences, to this fast-phased technological bounded universe.

@lightyoruichi: Harinder Singh is a Foursquare advocate and a social media enthusiast. He usually blogs on blog.lightyoruichi.com and tweets on @lightyoruichi. He is a geek and the most nerdiest person you'll ever know.

@hakimism: Hakim Albasrawy is a man of many hats, in 2008 he co-founded thisisbinding.com a web start-up focused on binding thesis for students. Not too long after that together with 3 other start-ups interested in social betterment he co-founded the movement UnReason, working primarily on the open data movement. This hat gives Hakim hope for the future of Malaysia. In 2010 he took up another hat he got involved in a consultancy (Tandemic) that provides social media support with a difference "social media for difference". Hakim often can be seen working in quiet cafes around KL and PJ and can be tweeted at @hakimism.

Are you on the map?

Geolocation_social_networks

Have you ever noticed that your friends are posting their locations in Facebook or Twitter? Did you ever wonder how come your friends are able to display their location and the map of their location? Did a thought came up in your mind thinking "Wow, what kind of application is that?" or "Oh no, its another game application.".

Well, its not a game application. The postings you saw is a geo-location social network called Foursquare

What is Foursquare
“Foursquare is a mobile application that is a cross between a friend-finder, a social city-guide, and a game that rewards you for doing interesting things. Foursquare lets you “check in” to a place when you’re there, tell friends where you are, and track the history of where you’ve been–and who you’ve been there with. Foursquare challenges you to explore your city in new and fun ways by earning points, winning mayorships, and unlocking badges and specials for trying new places and revisiting old favorites.”

There are also other geo-location social networks like GowallaBrightkiteLoopt and others alike you might want to try.

One of the features in Foursquare are the badges. This badges are earned by users as achievements to prove that you are actively socialising in various location. It also encourages friendly competition among friends to see who is more social. One of those badges is the Swarm Badge. In order to acquire this badge, a criteria of 50+ check ins is needed at one location in the last 3 hours. Quite a lot users needed to achieve this right?

For your information, SMCPg will be organising an event on the 7th October at Suntech @ Penang Cybercity with the theme "Are you on the map?". The event will feature a panel discussion by seasoned social media users on geo-location social networking. Why use it? Can it be used to help businesses? How to use it smartly? This discussion is meant to answer all those questions.

The event also has a goal to achieve the first ever swarm badge in Penang as it was never achieved in any location in Penang. Getting 50+ people to check-in at one location? The world is watching to see if Penang is able to get its very own swarm badge. Geo-location social networking is going to be a social media wave that will hit the mainstream by storm. So why not show that Penang is surfing the wave?

So are you on the map?
